Why not support them in performing both? Words are actions, oftentimes. Putting out a statement of belief such as this is not easy. I'd hope they're also doing material items to make the lives of their black employees better but that Madden 21 coins does not mean I want to take care of this as meaningless. Placing out a public statement is truly a fantastic step forwards for initiatives such as that, because if EA isn't doing enough then it's really simple for people tirelessly to say"Look, our actions are materially different from our stated values and we should do something about that." In the end of the day if you refuse to admit when a business makes a small step you appreciate then how will they ever learn how to generate a big step you love? You are treating this just like a political discussion where earning this small concession means you won't have the negotiating power to make a larger one later on. Is the lesson you want them to understand from all that human decency isn't worth attractive to because it doesn't actually affect purchasing decisions?
I believe according to your remark that we are going to essentially disagree on idealism vs. realism, and that's fine. I find myself generally at the center of realism and idealism since I understand the way the world works but I want a better world; you do not need to select one or the other. I don't know why we need to give corporations a pass just because they aren't people (which Citizens United would disagree with Buy Madden 21 coins but that's another discussion.) We should not only accept the best we're given by a business, we should anticipate the best we need out of these. Companies are produced from humans calling the shots and you will find an infinite amount of cases of organizations that both make enormous profits and stand up for great causes. Patagonia is a great example. They do not have to create sustainable goods and offer repair and reuse programs to go against fast fashion, but they do and they make a lot of money .
